Independence…

I have always considered myself independent. I take care of things. I solve problems. Asking for help has never come naturally to me, which became painfully obvious after shoulder surgery when even simple tasks suddenly required another person.

Starting over has brought independence back into focus for me in a different way. There is practical independence…managing a home, finances, schedules and all of the daily things that need attention. Then there is emotional independence, which I am discovering is not the same as doing everything alone.

I can make my own decisions and still need people. I can be strong and still ask for help. I can build a life for myself and still lean on my family and friends.

Painting taught me that too. I paint my own canvas, but I learned from instructors. I watch demonstrations. I ask questions. I accept feedback. None of that makes the finished painting less mine.

Independence is not isolation. I think I confused those things at times.

I am proud that I can stand on my own. I am equally grateful that I do not always have to.
